Remove actions tab from folder_contents

Description

Have you ever lost complete folders because you used delete from the 'Actions' tab within 'folder_contents'? I have!

Motivation.

having two delete/cut/copy/paste buttons in one screen doesn't make sense at all. In theory that action tab controls the folder you are editing, so I am the dumb guy for trowing away my folder. But we all know theory and practice are two different things.

Assumptions.

we save our end users from cursing and losing their files.

Proposal.

  • not show the actions tab where it's most confusing; within 'contents'. Just hide it.
  • Leave it on other views, until we come up with a new UI.

Implementation.

Preferably just hide the tab in 'folder_contents'.

Risks.

It very important that the contents buttons and action tab keep sharing items on clipboard. It's important you can still paste your file with the contents button, which you've copied with the actions tab.

-1 This is why there's a confirmation screen. Does that screen need to be clearer? I don't think this change is necessary.

-1. Perhaps the confirmation should be improved ("Do you really want to delete this item and THE FOLLOWING CHILDREN (list the first 5, plus say there-are-more, etc.")

But this is a clearly consistent part of our noun-verb interface.

Clearing Owner field of 4.0 PLIPs so we can use it to mean "implementor". (Many of these owners were automatically assigned from choosing a Component that had a default owner.)

Actually, I don't think this is a bad idea, just that the risks of the green-bar options not being consistent isn't enough to justify the change right now.

FWT vote +0. Other tabs already don't display the actions menu in the green-bar so I don't think it decreases consistency to remove it from the contents tab.

FWT vote: -1. The menu actions are not a duplicate, because they operate on the container rather than the contained items. In addition, it's possible to include other actions on this menu (subtyping is a common one), and excluding the menu from the contents tab would mean an extra click would be required to execute one of those actions after navigating to an item via the contents tab, which is fairly common.

FWT Vote: -1 the contents tab is a place were folks may be doing many changes such as copy and pasting of items around the site and a confirmation screen for the delete seems adequate.
